Boys Basketball Fends Off Rogers for Section 8AAAA
Quarter-Final Win 72-66

The Spuds trailed throughout the first half but after a key end of the half 3 point play cut the lead to 31-33 going into the halftime. Moorhead then came out and pushed to a 48-43 lead with 11:09 to go. Rogers refused to give in showing resilence tying the game 55-55 with 7:09 left in the game. Moorhead would push out to a 66-62 lead and then hold the ball before taking quality shots or being fouled putting them at the line where they converted the free throws. Aaron Lien led the Spuds with 30 points as Austin Nelson contributed 22 and Cody Darow added 12. Moorhead improves to 17-8 on the season and will play Elk River in the Section Semi-Finals in St Cloud on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 PM.

Girls Hockey Falls to Bemidji 4-1

Girls Basketball defeats bemidji 62-55, wixo has double-double

Hailey Wixo had 20 points and 10 steals as Moorhead defeated Bemidji in Section play Tuesday night at the Moorhead Gym. Kelli Tonn added 19 points and the Spuds improved to 3-5 on the season. Moorhead lead 39-28 at the half.

Boys Basketball Cruises to win over fergus falls 79-63 as lien puts in 33 points

Aaron Lien scored 33 points and Austin Nelson had 18 leading the Spuds to a road win over the Otters.

Davis scores two as Girls Hockey wins over crookston

Moorhead won their second in a row Tuesday night as they defeated Crookston 5-1 at the Moorhead Sports Center. Tori Davis had two goals and an assist. Jenna Ulberg opened the scoring for the Spuds in the first period scoring at 8:09. The Pirates would even the score at 6:03 in the second to tie it at 1-1. As the second period wound down Moorhead scored twice to open a 3-1 lead as Taylor O'Connell (1:14 left) and Missy Setter (16 seconds left) both scored. Tori Davis then added her two goals in the third period to ice the game.

Moorhead gave a strong West Fargo team a tough match before falling 37-32 Tuesday night at the West Fargo gym.

Boys Hockey Gets Section Win Over Brainerd 4-1

Tony Uglem scored two goals in the first period leading Moorhead to a key Section 8AA win over Brainerd Tuesday night in Brainerd. The Warriors cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period as Griffin Campbell scored at 5:19 but the Spuds answered with a goal from Leif Johnson at 12:27 to make it 3-1. The game stayed that way until Brainerd pulled their goalie Kyle Helmberger with 1:35 to go and Aaron Herdt scored a empty netter with 1 second left on the clock. Moorhead improves to 6-2 on the season. The Spuds travel to Blaine on Friday for a 7:30 pm start and then Saturday to Minnetonka for a 7:00 pm game.

Spud Boys Basketball Nets win 76-62 Over Rogers

Aaron Lien scored 30 points and had 9 rebounds in leading the Spuds over Rogers Saturday in the Moorhead High Gym. Austin Nelson chipped 16 points. Moorhead improves to 2-1 on the season and will play Fergus Falls on the road Tuesday night at 7:30 pm.

Girls Hockey Gets win over sartell/Sauk Rapids 9-0

Tori Davis had 4 goals and 2 assists to lead Moorhead and Jenna Ulberg also had a hattrick Friday night scoring 3 goals and getting 2 assists as the Spuds defeated the Storm'N Sabres at the Moorhead Sports Center. Kristen Drechsel had a goal and chipped in 4 assists while Missy Setter picked up the other Spud goal. Moorhead improved to 1-6-1 on the season and will take onCrookston at home Tuesday night in the Moorhead Sports Center starting at 7:30 pm.

Moorhead Boys Hockey Falls to Centennial 5-1

Centennial came out charging and scored just 22 seconds into the first period. They would go on to add twon more goals in the period. Moorhead wasn't able to get on the scoreboard until 3:36 into the second period as Tony Uglem scored with the assist going to brother Nicholas. The spuds could get no closer as Centennial would add two more goals in the second to end the scoring on the night. Moorhead falls to 5-2 on the season and will play next on the road against Brainerd on Tuesday starting at 7:15 pm.

Spuds defeat roseau in OT 4-3

In round one of the Moorhead - Roseau rivalry 2012-2013 edition the Spuds came out on top late in overtime as Thomas Carey tipped in a shot from Alex Mehnert after Aaron Herdt got him the puck at the point. The teams traded opportunities throughout the fast paced game and into overtime. Spud goalie Peter Macfarlane stepped up and made several key saves in the third period to keep the score tied.

The Spuds started the game with a quick goal at 45 seconds into the first period as Tony Uglem tipped in a rebound after Grant Weiss and Nick Uglem each put shots on net. Roseau answered a minute and a half later as Jack Helgeson evened the score at one. Aaron Herdt took advantage of a defender breaking a stick on a pass and zoomed in on a breakaway to score at 10:52 to give Moorhead a 2-1 lead after the first period.

The only scoring in the second was a goal by the Rams with just 25 seconds left by Alex Strand knotting the score at 2-2. Roseau used that momentum lift going into the third period by scoring again just 40 seconds into the period as Zach Yon picked up the goal. Less than a minute later Leif Johnson scored for Moorhead. Johnson had a great game playing physical throughout the game by putting some major hits on Ram players.

Moorhead Girls Hockey falls to roseau 4-0

The Spud Girls hockey team traveled to Roseau tonight to take on the Rams. The Rams showed their strength as they outshot the Spuds 40-16 and scored 4 unanswered goals.

Boys Hockey Quick Strikes Net a win over Buffalo 4-1

The Spuds fell behind 1-0 to Buffalo and there was a tension in the arena at Moorhead Sports Center. Thomas Carey erased any fears by scoring two goals in the last minute of the second period 22 seconds apart. The first one on a assist from Will Borgen to tie the game at 1-1. Then 22 seconds later Carey scored again this time going top corner over Ben Zitur on assists from Tony Uglem and Alex Mehnert. To top off the Spud quick strike trifecta just 11 seconds later Will Borgen scored on assists from Carey and Tony Uglem. There was still 12 seconds left in the second period but Moorhead wasn't able to get one more.

Carey ended up with 2 goals and 2 assists, Tony Uglem had a goal and 2 assists and Will Borgen added a goal and a assist. Jacob Dittmer started his first game and picked up the win in net.

Moorhead will play again at home on Tuesday versus rival Roseau starting at 6:00 PM. Roseau is 3-1 on the season with wins over TRF, Hibbing and Buffalo. The only loss came to Grand Rapids 5-2. They are averaging 3.6 goals per game led by Zach Yon and Alex Strand each with 9 points.

Boys Basketball Fall In Home Opener against Stillwater

Aaron Lien scored with 1:32 left in the game to bring Moorhead within 59-57 and then Stillwater ran off 7 straight points to win 66-57. Moorhead came into the game ranked #10 in the Minnesota State 4A poll. Lien led the Spuds with 24 points while Brett Lawrence added 12 and Austin Nelson had 13 points each.

Girls Basketball defeated by south in OT 63-60

Hailey Wixo led the Spuds with 21 points and Kelli Tonn had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Boys Hockey Gets Big section win over bemidji 5-4

Aaron Herdt got the Spuds started early with two goals on assists from Thomas Carey and Alex Mehnert on the second goal. The Lumberjacks responded just 49 seconds later as Michael Forseth scored making it 2-1 after the first period.

Bemidji flipped the game around in the second period as Matt Serratore then Mike Sauer scored to put the Lumberjacks ahead 3-2. Moorhead responded as Tony Uglem scored on a assist from Nick Uglem at 14:41 to end the second period 3-3.

Grant Weiss kicked off the third period scoring just 26 seconds into the period. Matt Serratore scored again on a powerplay at 11:22 to tie the game. Tony Uglem then decided the game with his second goal of the night at 13:16 assisted by brother Nick.

Moorhead improves to 3-1 on the season and Bemidji falls to 1-3. The Spuds will play again at home Saturday night starting at 5:15 PM, Moorhead Sports Center versus Buffalo.

Moorhead Falls to bemidji in state Quarter-Final 35-14

 

Spuds Rally to 35-21 Win over sartell for section 8AAAAA football Championship

Sartell-St Stephen won the coin toss and came out with with a vengence to start the game Friday night at St John's University in Collegeville, MN. The Sabres looked poised to over power the Spuds in the first half with a stromg offensive showing running the ball and mixing in quick short passing strikes leading to 21 points. The Sartell defense was stellar in holding up the Spuds running game only allowing Chase Morlock 31 yards.

The second half proved to be a whole new game although. Moorhead received the kickoff and Chase Morlock refused to be tackled as he ran a quick sprint to the left of the Moorhead line and rumbled 37 yards firing up the whole team. Morlock went in from 4 yards out making it 21-14. On the first play of the second half for the Sabres Parker Hagen went deep to try a big play and was picked of by Tyler Eidsness and the Spuds had the ball again. The Spuds went 67 yards in seven plays to score tying the game at 21.

Moorhead would get 4 interceptions in the second half and score 28 unanswered points leading to a 35-21 win and the Section 8AAAAA Championship. Chase Morlock rushed for 214 yards on the night and quarterback Aaron Lien went 9 of 13 for 68 yards in the air. Drake Benedict added 49 yards on the ground. The Sabres finish the year at 7-3 and the Spuds are now 10-0 and will take on Bemidji next Saturday at St Cloud State University in the MN 5A State Quarter-Final starting at 6:00pm.

Spuds Heat up wintery night 41-14 in section semi-Final win over alexandria

Chase Morlock was energized Saturday night to kick off the Minnesota State Playoffs at Jim Gotta Stadium as he had 10 rushes for 312 yards, 4 touchdowns and also added 2 receptions for another 31 yards. Moorhead is now 9-0 on the season and will play Sartell in the Section 8AAAAA Championship next Friday night at St Johns University.

Boys Soccer To Take On Eastview in State Quarter-Final

Thursday at 5:30 PM at St Cloud State the Spuds will take on Eastview in the Minnesota State Boys Soccer Tournament. Moorhead is 14-2-1 on the season and Eastview is 12-2-5. Eastview was the #1 seed in Section 3AA defeating Hastings 8-0, Eagan 2-1 and Apple Valley 1-0 to reach the State Quarter-Finals.

Volleyball Team Sweeps Detroit Lakes in 3 sets

Moorhead improved to 14-13 on the season with a sweep over Detroit Lakes Monday at the Moorhead High Gym. The Spuds won 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23 lead by Maddie Swanson with 12 kills and Lexi Johnson with 9 kills and 3 blocks.

Spud Football Defeats Duluth East 41-20

Moorhead wrapped up the regular season Wednesday with a road trip to play Duluth East and came out with a 41-20 win. The Spuds were leading 21-20 at the end of the 3rd quarter and reeled off 20 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to seal the win. Spud quarterback Aaron Lien threw for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns, Drake Benedict rushed for 63 yards and 2 touchdowns as Moorhead improved to 8-0 on the season and is the #1 seed going into the playoffs. A bonus of the #1 seed is a first round bye. The Spuds will play in the Section semi-final at Jim Gotta Stadium on Staurday, Oct. 27th against the winner of St. Cloud Tech - Alexandria. Sartell-St. Stephen gets the other Section bye and will play the winner of St. Cloud Apollo - Sauk Rapids-Rice.

Boys Soccer Gains State Tourney with win over Anoka

Spuds mid-fielder Carl Walker blasted a shootout kick into the upper left portion of the net to propell Moorhead into the Minnesota State Tournament on Tuesday. The Spuds defeated Anoka 1-0 at the Horizon Middle School Soccer complex. Moorhead is now 14-2-1 on the season and will play in the quarter-finals on Oct. 24-26 against one of the qualifiers listed below. Watch for details as announcements are made by the MSHSL.

Moorhead Boys Soccer 3-1 Over Bemidji

Gabe Roach scored on a free kick with less than 8 minutes to go breaking a 1-1 tie as Moorhead knocked off undefeated Bemidji 3-1. Roach added another goal on a rebound with 1:30 left as insurance. The Spuds improved to 10-1-1 on the season and Bemidji fell to 9-1-1.

Moorhead Volleyball rallies in five against sartell

Moorhead defeats bemidji on late touchdown

Bemidji came to town as the runner-up in Minnesota State Class 4A going 12-1 last season, but the Spuds rose to the occassion Friday night in the season opener handing the Lumberjacks a 34-30 loss. Chase Morlock lead the Spuds with 193 yards on the ground on 24 carries and scoring four touchdowns.
